The Oklahoma Golf Association’s 27th Senior & Super Senior State Amateur Championship concluded Thursday at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club following four days of competitiion, August 10-13.
Peter Vitali of Oklahoma City captured the Senior State Amateur Championship after advancing through a strong field. Vitali opened match play with a 6&5 victory over Shay T. Varnell of Oklahoma City, followed by a 1-up win over Christopher Lee of Edmond. In the quarterfinals, Vitali defeated Kirk Maynord of Norman, 1-up, before advancing to the championship match with a 6&5 semifinal victory over Ron Roden of Oklahoma City. Vitali then capped off his championship run with a 4&2 victory over Charlie Crouse of Oklahoma City in the final. This is Vitali’s second Senior State Amateur Championship.
In the Super Senior Division, Terry Hughes of Bartlesville claimed his first Super Senior championship after an impressive run through the match-play bracket. Hughes began with a 5&4 victory over his fellow Hillcrest member Shawn Barker, a overtime victory in 19 Holes over Kirk Wright of Oklahoma City, then defeated Jerry Nick of Okmulgee in the finals 2&1.
The championship was contested under hot summer conditions throughout the week, adding another challenge for players as they navigated Twin Hills Golf & Country Club and competed through multiple rounds of match play.
